After winning in the school science fair, two out of the nine students who qualified to advance competed at the county fair on Jan. 9 at WVUP. The county fair was originally scheduled for Dec. 15 but was postponed due to bad weather. The qualifiers are:
- Freshman Carl Dearth: first in Microbiology
- Freshman Brady Miller: first in Physics and Astronomy
Both were the only high school division winners and will continue to regionals.
Dearth completed his project on the best facial coverings to stop the spread of bacteria if there was another pandemic.
“I chose that idea because after the pandemic, I always wondered how I could help if another pandemic were to happen and people didn’t have medical resources at the ready if they had to go out and perform their jobs,” Dearth said.
For Miller, his lifelong baseball playing influenced his project on how temperature affects how baseballs move.
“I felt relieved kinda (to win) because I did a decent amount of work on it,” Miller said.
The two will compete in the regional science fair today at Grand Pointe Conference Center.
“Overall, I feel confident that I’ll place in regionals,” Dearth said.
