New Year’s resolutions for most are to stay healthy or make more money, but art teacher Jonathan Walsh’s was to start a gaming club. Described as “kind of like a book club”, the new Retro Game Club will play and share their thoughts with each other about an older video game.
“When I was a kid, when you played video games, you’d get stuck in a certain area and you’d talk to your friends and somebody’s older brother beat that area and they’d have the hint of how to do it,” Walsh said. “You know, (I) kinda miss that camaraderie of playing games and talking about them. So, that’s kinda the idea I have.”
The first meeting will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 14 in Walsh’s room, 126S, after school. However, future meeting dates can be adjusted to better fit students’ needs. Meetings will last until around 4 p.m.
“We’ll talk about a specific video game and then if it’s something that they (students) can play, then…we’ll spend a week or two playing that game and then come back and discuss what we thought of it,” Walsh said.
Walsh hopes to create a space for students to hang out, find others with the same interests and introduce the club to games that even Walsh has not played.
“I think it’s (playing retro games) a fun look back at a different time period that they (students) might not be familiar with,” Walsh said. “There’s definitely games that they will be familiar with, but seeing the olden technology, seeing the older games I think might be fascinating for some kids.”
Any students with questions should contact Walsh.
