As spring quickly approaches and the gloom of winter is melting away, many people are looking for calm music that can warm their hearts.
I’m someone who typically listens to fast and aggressive music. However, I’m not against trying different things. For the season of new beginnings, I decided to give indie folk musician Faye Webster’s album, “Underdressed at the Symphony,” released on March 1, a try.
The first song on the album, “Thinking About You,” is my least favorite of all of the tracks. It’s six and a half minutes of a repetitive and boring chorus.
I give “Thinking About You” a 1/10.
While the album started off bad, I still kept an open mind for the rest of the songs. “But Not Kiss,” the next song on the album, is a lot better than the first one. Although it can get a bit repetitive, it’s a lot shorter and the instrumental makes it fun.
I give “But Not Kiss” a 4/10.
On my first listen to “Wanna Quit All the Time,” I extremely disliked the song. However, after giving it another shot, I grew to like it. The lyrics are very self-reflective and many people, including myself, can find them relatable.
I give “Wanna Quit All the Time” a 5/10.
“Lego Ring” feels very unique to the other songs on the album. It features Lil Yachty, who is Webster’s friend from middle school. The addition of Lil Yachty adds a lot to the song, which makes it one of my favorites from the album.
I give “Lego Ring” an 8/10.
The next song, “Feeling Good Today,” is also extremely unique. It doesn’t have a chorus or any repeating lines, just three verses. Webster’s voice had heavy filtering on it, which made the song feel a bit odd, although it’s still definitely worth listening to.
I give “Feeling Good Today” a 5/10.
“Lifetime” is another repetitive track that feels far too long. The softness of the song makes it more enjoyable than “Thinking About You,” but I still found myself getting quite bored while listening to it.
I give “Lifetime” a 3/10.
The seventh song on the album, and another one of my favorites, is “He Loves Me Yeah!” It’s a fun song that is a much bigger improvement from “Lifetime.” Even though the chorus is repetitive, like the majority of songs on this album, the line delivery is entertaining.
I give “He Loves Me Yeah!” a 7/10.
The next track, “eBay Purchase History,” is another unique one. There’s no chorus, and every line is different. It’s a good length, which keeps it from getting boring. While it’s not my favorite on the album, it’s definitely a great song.
I give “eBay Purchase History” a 6/10.
The title track, “Underdressed at the Symphony,” definitely had a lot of expectations from me. Luckily, I was not disappointed. The instrumental is fun and the lyrics are interesting. Even the chorus, which is just the same line repeated, is entertaining. With how great it is, this song should have been the last one on the album.
I give “Underdressed at the Symphony” a 7/10.
I expected the last song on the album to be a grand finale, but I was fairly disappointed. “Tttttime” is yet another repetitive and forgettable song. I think that “Underdressed at the Symphony” would be a much better song to go out on.
I give “Tttttime” a 2/10.
Although I had my reservations about this genre of music, I didn’t hate this album and I’m glad I gave it a chance. There were some great songs, like “Lego Ring” and “Underdressed at the Symphony,” but also terrible songs like “Thinking About You” and “Tttttime.” I recommend this album to anyone who’s looking for slow, relaxing songs. If you get bored by slow and repetitive music, I still recommend you check out a few of the songs. It’s a nice album to represent this spring and its new beginnings.
Overall, I give the album “Underdressed at the Symphony” a 5/10.
