On April 19, Taylor Swift released her 11th album, “The Tortured Poets Department.” The original album had 16 songs and then she surprised all of her fans with an additional 15 songs called “The Anthology.” With 31 songs to choose from there are lots of options, so here are some students’ favorite songs from the album.
Sophomore Leila Noland:
“My favorite song on “The Tortured Poets Department” is “So Long, London” because I usually tend to gravitate towards sadder songs and also it was just so eye opening to me to hear about the reality of her and Joe Alwyn’s relationship.”
Junior Morgan McFee:
“My favorite song off of “The Tortured Poets Department” is “Peter”. The beauty in this song is unmatched. To the lyrics, the story and the backing track, it’s just beautiful. ‘I won’t confess that I waited, but I let the lamp burn.’ Like hello? She (Wendy/Taylor) won’t say that she waited for him (Peter/Matty Healy), but she did. She left the lamp on for him to come back to her because she always held out hope that he would grow up and then come find her. She held on to this childhood dream of hers she thought was going to happen one day, only for it to never come and she only realizes this years later, that this dream she held onto has crumbled before her.”
Sophomore Emma Coleman:
“”I Can Do It With A Broken Heart.” It’s an upbeat song but you can hear the emotion in her voice. It’s like she is retelling what she went through as a rising singer. Hint: “They said, ‘Babe, you gotta fake it ‘til you make it’ and I did.””
Freshman Morgan Metz:
“My favorite song from “The Tortured Poets Department” has to be “Fresh Out The Slammer” because I just love the beat and the flow of the song.”
Junior Josie Bradley:
“I would say my favorite song from Taylor Swift’s new album is “loml” or “But Daddy I Love Him”. I like “loml” because it’s on piano and I love any song she does on piano. I also love the lyrics. I also like “But Daddy I Love Him” because I like how unserious it can be and how upbeat it is. Those are two very different songs and they are my favorite. Every song on the album is amazing and each song is a different story or emotion.”
