On the chilly evening of Tuesday, Dec. 3, the annual Christmas tree lighting was held in the horseshoe. The evening featured performances from the Big Red Band, A Cappella Choir and Red Wing Drill Team. Then members of the Diversity Student Union (DSU) read “Pete the Cat Saves Christmas”.
“We chose to read that story because it was a fun book about Pete the Cat’s Christmas adventure and we thought the children would enjoy it,” DSU president Olivia Shawver said.
The Big Red Band performed “The Song of Angels,” then The Red Wings danced to “Rockin Around the Christmas Tree”. Following the Red Wings, the A Cappella Choir sang “O Come, O come Emmanuel,” “Carol of the Bells” and “Silent Night”.
“My favorite song to perform at the tree lighting is ‘Silent Night’ because of how beautiful it sounds all together,” sophomore A Cappella member Cheyenne Stewart said.
The purpose of the tree lighting is so local families in need can have decorated Christmas trees for the holidays. Several school clubs and organizations devoted their time to decorating and donating them for this event.
“It makes me happy that Student Council and other groups are able to donate Christmas trees to the less fortunate,” Student Council president Tyra Green said. “It’s nice to know that I was able to be a part of making a family’s Christmas.”
