According to Columbia University, over half of the U.S. population makes a New Year’s resolution every year. When it comes to keeping it, fewer than 10% of that number achieve their goal. Here are some of the resolutions set by students for this new year.
“My New Year’s resolution is to study more. With my AP classes, studying is important, but I never do it. I think the worksheets I do in class are enough, but it never is. I hope by doing this more my test grades will improve.”
Kennedy Porter, 11
“To focus on myself and get back in shape.”
Athena Staats, 10
“My first resolution is staying off my phone as much as possible. I have a bad habit of scrolling on TikTok or Instagram for a long time when I have better things to do. Phones can be distracting in social situations, and I actually think my attention span is way too short because of it. I set timers on my apps to remind me when I’ve been on my phone too long, and I’ve picked up a few hobbies here and there to make up for the time I would have been on my phone. The second is to find my way in college. As a senior, I am nervous to go out into the world on my own. It’s exciting, but I really would like to try and find a rhythm the first semester of college and be as successful as possible.”
Kadie Anderson, 12
“My New Year’s resolution is to spend more time in God’s word and to strengthen my relationship with Him. With this new year, I plan to accomplish this by reading the Bible and by leaning on Him rather than the world, as well as remembering His perfect plan He has for my life.”
Eden DeBord, 11
“My New Year’s resolution is to better my overall lifestyle by eating healthy and to try new things and hobbies. I have always wanted to learn to sew, so learning that, I feel, will help my life, too, in the future.”
Olivia Eakle, 10
“This year for my New Year’s resolution, I decided to focus on myself and make goals that would better my lifestyle and create enjoyment. I want to stay consistent on practicing the guitar and make time to learn new songs and be able to play in front of people. I also want to continue to save money from the job I have now to set myself up for things I want and need in my future.”
Makayla House, 11
“My New Year’s resolution is to be more consistent and organized with my schoolwork. I plan on using free time like lunch and advisory to do any work that I would need to get caught up on, if any.”
Zach Gaston, 9
“My New Year’s resolution is to become a better piano player. The reason for this is I want to be able to accompany the A Cappella Choir this year.”
Alex Marshall, 11
“My New Year’s resolution is to become a better student and focus more on my future. I would say this is my resolution because I want to become successful in life. In order to do that, I need to make changes while I’m younger.”
Cheyenne Stewart, 10
“The goal I’m working towards this year is, honestly, to prioritize my peace over others. The only thing I’m doing to help myself graduate is applying for scholarships and financial aid.”
Bryleigh Holley, 12
