In memory of former choir director Jean Singer, a legend in West Virginia’s world of music who died in April, A Cappella Choir director Joshua Dubs has crafted a Christmas concert of her style and preference.
Dubs believes that his selection is a very traditional style that Singer would have approved of.
“I think (the selection) will honor her well,” Dubs said. “I think the community will appreciate acknowledging Jean and her contribution to music in Parkersburg and West Virginia.”
For the community, the concert will be on Dec. 18 at 7 p.m. in the auditorium.
“I think (the Christmas concert) will go pretty good,” said senior Hunter Hall, a member of Chamber Choir. “I believe that we are prepared enough to at least make it enjoyable.”
Three choirs will perform during the annual Christmas concert: A Cappella, Chamber and Women’s Ensemble. Between annuals and new pieces, the choirs will be singing 17 songs in total.
“(My favorite piece) is ‘Seal Lullaby’ mainly because of how expressive it is,” senior Katherine Rutherford, Chamber Choir member, said. “There’s some comfort in the song as you hear it grow and fall quiet again, allowing the singers to be more expressive.”
The community will also be able to enjoy the individual voices of some members of the choirs who have earned solos.
“I didn’t expect to get the solo. I thought Hunter would get it,” said junior Reece Smith, a soloist in ‘Believe’. “I’m happy I got it. It’s a good solo.”
On Dec. 13, the choirs performed for fifth graders of all elementary schools that filter into PHS.
“The fifth grade concert went pretty well,” said senior Brittany Ward, a member of Chamber Choir. “All that matters at the end of the day is that the fifth graders enjoyed it and they did.”
During second through fourth periods on Dec. 19, students will be able to attend the concert for a $1 entrance fee. All proceeds will go to the Humane Society.
“I expect the choir to do well, focus, and do their best for the betterment of the choir and to honor Jean and the school well,” Dubs said.
