Fans have been gifted with another movie from the brilliant mind of Tim Burton. I have always enjoyed his weird, sometimes haunting, movies. “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” is the second installment of the “Beetlejuice” franchise which takes place 36 years after the original film. Words like “absurd,” “wacky” and “fun” only just begin to describe it.
“Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” starts out with Lydia Deetz, played by Winona Ryder, who returns to the role after 36 years, and her television show where she goes to people’s haunted houses to look for ghosts. During a crazy taping of her show, she thinks she sees Beetlejuice (Micheal Keaton) for the first time in years. She is abruptly called to her stepmother’s art show, and when she arrives, she learns that her dad has died.
Meanwhile, her daughter, Astrid Deetz (Jenna Ortega) is being bullied at her boarding school by girls who are making fun of Lydia for saying that she can see ghosts. After picking her up from school, Lydia, her step-mother Delia (Catherine O’Hara, who is also returning to her role after 36 years), and her manager Rory, played by Justin Theroux, whisk Astrid away to the town of Winter River. They bring her to the house where Lydia had her nightmarish experience with Beetlejuice in the first movie.
The film is a surreal tale full of mischief and fun.[/pullquote]The film is a surreal tale full of mischief and fun. They end up in the afterlife and the color scheme and unearthly set design really add to the story. The movie was well done and does an excellent job of making the viewer feel like they are in some eccentric dream.
I would recommend this movie to anyone who is a fan of Tim Burton’s films and fans of absurdist movies.
I rate the film “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” a 4 / 5.
