Big Reds got their boogie on the week of Sept. 9 for a 70s-themed homecoming. Students showed their spirit by dressing up for spirit days throughout the week. They dressed up in pajamas, tie dye, rhyme without reason, 70s characters and PHS red and white.
On Friday, Sept. 13, there was a thuse to get students excited for fall sports and the football game later that night. Seniors and captains on fall sports teams were introduced and shared when their next games would be. The senior class later won the relay competition and cheer off.
“It was a little dead at first but I tried to pick it up and I think it worked,” Senior Women’s Club president Abby Reed said. “I was very excited the seniors won. Let’s go Big Reds!”
The annual homecoming parade down Washington Avenue was held Friday night, featuring clubs and organizations such as band, Red Wings, cheer, A Cappella Choir, Senior Women’s Club, T-Club, homecoming court and more. Floats were decorated according to the Groovy Nights theme with Scooby Doo, disco and flower power as examples.
“Dressing up was definitely one of the best parts of the parade and I think it really helped make our float look better,” Junior Cabinet member Tanner Cancade said. “My absolute favorite part of the parade was passing out the candy to the kids and just seeing how happy they were.”
At the football game against Hurricane later than night, students showed up dressed like they were straight out of the 70s. For the first half of the game the Big Reds and Redskins were tied, but during the second half the Redskins won 49-14. One of the two touchdowns from the Big Reds was scored by a freshman, wide receiver Brady Thorn.
“It was pretty awesome, especially since it was my first ever one in high school,” Thorn said. “I would definitely say the game was fun. Even though we lost, I still had a good time.”
The winners of homecoming court were seniors Kadie Anderson and Andrew Shafer, juniors Brynn Frye and Ben Chichester, sophomores Anna Spader and Drey Grinter, and freshmen Gracie Taylor and Kevin Hart.
The following day, the homecoming dance took place in the Fieldhouse. Students got all glammed up to go dance with their friends. There were many 70s decorations such as pink and orange balloons and a big peace sign balloon arch.
“I thought homecoming was a huge success,” Anderson said. “The theme was fun and easy to dress up for. There was so much school spirit the Friday before the dance, something you can’t find outside PHS.”
