The football team suffered a disappointing loss to Morgantown during their opening game at Stadium Field on Friday, Aug. 30. Despite a strong effort from the players, the Mohigans proved to be a formidable opponent, winning 24-13.
“I think they tried their hardest to win,” junior Olivia Kennerly said. “That’s all you can ask. They were trying their hardest and gave it their best.”
The atmosphere at the game was upbeat, with a large crowd of students, parents and alumni in attendance. The marching band, along with eighth grade and alumni band members, performed a spirited halftime show including: “Fanfare,” ”Paint it Black,” “Sousa,” and the alma mater. The cheerleaders and Red Wings also kept the energy high throughout the game.
Band members such as senior Mathew Holland had mixed opinions on the halftime show due to the heat.
“Halftime was fun. Although it was hot in our uniforms, it was amazing,” Holland said. “I loved having the eighth graders and the alumni there. It was all really fun anyway. ”
Sophomore Bee Hornbeck, like many others, thought the Red Wings had a spectacular performance.
“The Red Wings were amazing. I got a front row view,” Hornbeck said.
Although the outcome was not in their favor, the players were optimistic about the season ahead.
“We are optimistic because we’ve been training and working out a lot,” said junior lineman Tyler Morris. “I think we’ll get another season in the playoffs like we did last year.”
Tomorrow, Sept. 6, the football team has an away game against South Charleston.
