Key Club is a student-led worldwide service organization for high schoolers that spreads kindness through acts of service. Key Club’s mission is to provide members with as many service opportunities as possible to build leadership and character. It is a fun and rewarding club to be a part of and I encourage anyone who has a passion for helping others to join. If that’s not convincing enough, here are some other reasons to become a member next school year.
1. Being an active member of Key Club looks great on college applications. When colleges are looking through applications, they want a well-rounded student and being a member of Key Club makes applicants just that. Being a part of this club shows commitment, integrity and empathy for people in the community. With that, the community service and volunteering hours alone will speak volumes.
2. Members become an active part of your community and make a difference. There are many volunteering opportunities that really help out the community, such as judging elementary school science fairs, writing teachers letters, organizing an Easter egg hunt for kindergarteners and wrapping presents during Christmas time. It is so entertaining to meet new people in the community and to do good for them through these acts of service.
3. Members develop new skills that are useful later in life. In Key Club members develop leadership abilities, organizational skills, teamwork, and learn how to communicate well with others. All of these skills are very useful when you go through life, especially in the workplace. Being a student-led organization gives members a chance to express their ideas and do projects they are passionate about. So unlike other clubs, members are able to choose how the club decides to move forward, or what to do next.
4. It’s easy to make new friends! This year members were given the opportunity to attend the District Convention (DCON) in Washington D.C. DCON is a convention that every member has the opportunity to attend each year. Members from all over the state and states around West Virginia attend. At DCON there were many student- operated workshops and competitions attendees were able to sign up for. During these activities members were encouraged to branch out and talk to people they don’t know. There were also many group meals and activities where everyone who attended came together and talked about their passion for Key Club. One night there was even a dance where everyone got dressed up and just had fun. This was an experience like no other and I encourage everyone who joins Key Club to attend.
5. Not only are members helping the community, it’s fun doing it. The service projects Key Club does are so exciting and having friends join along makes the project so much more enjoyable.
“You get to pick whatever organization in the community or school that you want to help out in some way,” said Key Club adviser Elizabeth Yoney. “So it is catered more to you.”
Less is not more when it comes to Key Club. The larger the group the better. With more members more volunteering opportunities are available. So if making a difference to the community and making memories with friends is intriguing to you, Key Club is an organization worth considering next school year!
