Romantic movies are a classic staple of Valentine’s Day. But if you’re like me, too many of these movies feel repetitive with the same straight couple dynamic. Luckily, there are some interesting gems out there that don’t revolve around frail women pining after macho men. While snacking on chocolates out of a heart-shaped box, consider watching these sapphic films.
Starting out with a recent movie released in 2023, “Bottoms” is a fun and refreshing film. Romance, drama, comedy and intense fight scenes all fit into only one hour and 32 minutes. The movie revolves around lesbians PJ and Josie as they start a self-defense club to attract girls. PJ and Josie are hilarious characters and a realistic representation of being an awkward teenager.
I give “Bottoms” an 8/10.
“But I’m a Cheerleader” is a must for any romantic movie night. Created in 1999 with a runtime of one hour and 24 minutes, it’s a timeless classic. The movie follows a cheerleader named Megan as she’s sent to conversion therapy. She starts out in denial of her sexuality, but she soon falls in love with fellow therapy member Graham. The movie has an impressive cast, with actors like Natasha Lyonne, Melanie Lynsky, RuPaul and many others.
I give “But I’m a Cheerleader” a 10/10.
Another old yet gold movie is “Bound,” released in 1996. The film is one hour and 48 minutes of developing the romance between ex-convict Corky and Violet, her new neighbor. Violet, played by Jennifer Tilly, is the girlfriend of a man in the mafia. Corky and Violet develop a plan to steal mobster money and run away together.
I give “Bound” a 9/10.
The next movie I recommend is “The Half of It.” It’s about a girl who is hired by a guy to write a love letter for his crush. Although, while writing it, she develops feelings for the girl she’s writing about. With a runtime of one hour and 44 minutes, this film contains multiple beautiful shots and poetic lines.
I give “The Half of It” a 7/10.
This Valentine’s Day, everyone should treat themselves to at least one of these movies. I recommend “But I’m a Cheerleader” the most. “The Half of It” was great, but it’s definitely my least favorite out of this list. Every reader should have a date with themselves to try these movies out, and maybe they’ll fall in love with them.
