The big debate in the hallway this week: who’s going to win the Super Bowl? Whether students are rooting for the Kansas City Chiefs (or maybe just Taylor Swift’s boyfriend) or the San Francisco 49ers there is a way to help the community and possibly get a prize for it.
The ‘Soup’er Bowl Food Drive is taking place through Feb. 9. To participate students can bring in as many cans of either tomato soup or chicken noodle soup as they desire. Once the cans are given to Mr. Vincent in his room, 227.5C, the student will be entered into a drawing for a gift card.
“By Feb. 9 they (students) need to bring them to my classroom,” said Vincent. “They can bring as many cans as they want and each can gets them one entry to win a gift card.”
A lingering question students may have is, why only those two kinds of soup? What kind of soup students bring in stands for who they are supporting in the Super Bowl. If students are all for the Chiefs, tomato soup is the way to go. Not only is the soup red just like the team’s colors, it also is “TS” abbreviated (if you know you know.) Chicken noodle soup can be brought in to show support for the 49ers if the scarlet and gold-wearing team is who students think will win it all.
“I want to try and make it easy for people to remember. So tomato soup, Chiefs. Red and Taylor Swift makes it easy to remember,” said Vincent. “Noodle sounds like Niners, so it’s an alliteration.”
Not only are students debating who is going to win the big game but they can also win a prize. Once students pick their team and bring in their soup they will be entered into a drawing. After Super Bowl LVIII concludes Feb. 11, the students who brought in soup for the winning team will have a chance to be picked for a gift card. The more cans of soup students bring in the more times their name will be entered into the drawing.
“For each can of soup you bring in, if that team wins, you get your name in a hat and then one person will get their name pulled out,” said Vincent. “You have to have your team, the soup you brought in, win the game.”
No matter who students root for or which team wins, this is an opportunity to help the community. After all of the cans of soup are collected they will be taken and donated to a local food pantry.
“The soup will go to the Latrobe Street Mission,” said Vincent. “They always need different resources, and we did this last year and they were really appreciative, so we decided to do it again.”
