The Journal, the PHS online student newspaper, was named a Crown Award Finalist by the Columbia Scholastic Press Association.
On Dec. 14, 2023 the CSPA announced Crown Award finalists in the News Publications/High School Digital News category. This award is the highest recognition given by the CSPA to a student publication for overall excellence. Not only was The Journal one of 213 finalists out of 672 entries from across the world, PHS was the only high school in the state of West Virginia to be named a Crown Award finalist.
The Journal switched from printed newspapers to online during 2021 in response to the Covid pandemic while students were learning remotely. The change was made so students would be able to access what was going on with the school from home.
On March 15 finalists will be awarded either a Silver or Gold Crown Award at the CSPA 100th Annual Spring Convention at the Columbia University campus in New York City.
“It’s a big honor to receive this award,” said sophomore Brooklyn Miller, a member of The Journal staff. “We work really hard putting out stories and keeping the site updated so to be recognized like this is amazing.”
