Empowering others and keeping the fun alive, senior Allyson Powers keeps her heart at the center of all she does. Powers is the 2023-24 assistant editor for the yearbook. She also is a member of Senior Women’s Club and Senior Cabinet as well as working at Blennerhassett Elementary School as a co-op student.
Leadership roles are a big responsibility no matter what it is and Powers’ job on the yearbook staff is no exception. She has to help plan, create, approve and perfect the yearbook. On top of her editor position she has also taken the lead on the PHS Media social media accounts. She believes the journalism program has shaped her into the person she is today. She is also viewed as the encourager of the staff.
“She is the heart of the editorial team,” said yearbook adviser Beth Koreski. “She is also the one who likes to build people up and encourage them. That’s what I really love about having her as assistant editor this year.”
Powers is planning to attend Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. She will further her education in journalism to later become a news anchor. After spending a year on the WPHS News staff and being involved in yearbook, journalism is where she feels the most at home.
“I always want to have a job that’s fun but also that I’m comfortable and I can put my heart in,” said Powers. “I don’t want to have a job that I will hate so that’s why I want to be a news anchor. WPHS was so fun and I love talking so it’s definitely something I can do.”
She also aspires to make a change in her hometown. After getting the news that her nephew was diagnosed with an autism disorder, Powers has had a plan to help kids in Wood County. One day, she would like to create a non-profit organization for special education programs.
”I feel like it’s been a lot for my sister,” said Powers “These (special education) teachers have one of the hardest jobs but at the end of the day they chose to be that. I want to help with the programs and find a way to fix the system in Wood County.”
Overall, Powers wants to “live life to the fullest.” She motivates herself and shares her positivity with her peers. She currently has a 3.89 GPA and strives to keep fun in her life.
“I’m really passionate about life,” said Powers. “You only live once and my biggest regret would be regretting what I did. I was a very shy person but now I just try to care about myself and live my life how I want to.”
