The week that Parkersburg sports fans love has come and gone. Here are the scores and highlights from the Rivalry Week games.
Starting off the week on Monday night was JV volleyball at home. The Big Reds ended with a win in a 2-0 match (25-21, 25-17). Right after that game the student section started filling into the stands for the varsity volleyball game. Varsity took home a loss in a 3-1 match (22-25, 22-25, 26-24, 16-25).
JV boys soccer was up next Tuesday night for their game at Erickson. They took home a 2-0 loss. The varsity team pulled through with a 9-0 win, with seniors Landon Shedd and Brayden Tingler both scoring two points. The turnout from the student section for both of these games was strong.
Golf was defeated by South on Wednesday in a 148-167 back nine showdown. Junior Vinnie Guice and senior Brielle Milhoan both shot 40. Senior Joey Koreski scored 42, and freshman Jack Louden (45) balanced the team’s score for the Big Reds.
Girls varsity soccer on Thursday night faced a loss against the lady Patriots 4-0 at Erickson. There was no JV game that night. The student section was even bigger and louder to support the lady Big Reds.
Now for the night everyone was waiting for, Friday night lights. Cross country and football both took home wins against the southside Patriots on Stadium Field. Cross country finished with a perfect combined score of 90. Junior Ellie Hines was the first girl to cross the finish line and senior Jack Mills was the first boy to cross the finish line. Four South runners occupied places in the top ten, three for boys and one for girls. The rest all belonged to the Big Reds.
Football took place shortly after the race. 5,000 people came to watch the annual crosstown showdown. Many thought the Big Reds were going to lose, but they proved people wrong with a 43-35 win. Senior David Parsons broke the school record with 496 yards in total offense, breaking the previous record by 60 yards.
The school spirit was everywhere. Fans were in their red and white cheering on their team. After the Big Reds won, the entire student section ran onto the field to celebrate their win with the players.
